Nitride is better than a plain phosphate barrel. A high quality chrome lined barrel is great too but I still prefer nitride. Generally better bang for the buck. I have a melonite barrel from PSA that looks exactly like the barrel on the right, it's nice and shiny. The one on the left definitely looks like phosphate to me. I've never seen a nitride/melonite barrel that dull.
