The blog post told us the NPC update is build 43. 42 is a misc update with some new features, but nothing immensely big. Keep in mind that although build 40-41 took a full year or so, they claim that this was only due to the complete rewrite it basically required of the game. If it was 'a few months away', even 6 months away, that means they are done building it 100% and the only thing they're doing is bug testing. If they're done building it and bug testing, they have an outline of when it will release. I'm not sure why you think things like this don't have timelines.
