Location. Albertville,Alabama. Tractor. MF 135. it is mixed grass hay with Johnson grass hay, I usually let it lay about 24hrs before I bale it. I usually bake it at 570 pto speed or higher. The grass is thick and the windrow are usually as wide as the mouth of the baler. About 10 bales per acre. Smooth belts might affect bale core starting but not bale shape/levelness. I think you got a bargain to get an operational Vermeer Rebel 5400 with only $200 invested in chains.

The Vermeer Rebel 5400 only needs 40 HP. You can pull the Vermeer with a smaller tractor and it will take hay at least 2 gears faster. The NH is a good machine because it uses the old expired Vermeer patents, but why pay more for older technology & a discontinued model when you can have a New Vermeer Rebel 5400.
The Rebel is a little lighter built, but pretty much the same workings. From my experience if they start a bale the only thing to stop them from turning is the slip clutch, chain breaks, gearbox goes down or something else mechanical from what I have seen. What they continue to discount are the 50 million head of cattle that are in smaller hears of 50 or less. These customers may be able to afford a $30k baler but from a business standpoint does not workout.

I have a 5400 that has this problem, the spiral roller rolls the hay out on top of the wind gate and is then pulled back in until the bale is a bigger diameter then no problem.
